Tao Te Ching - Stephen Mitchell translation

In June, The Unread Book Club turns toward the Tao Te Ching translated by Stephen Mitchell, a contemporary rendering of the ancient Taoist classic traditionally attributed to Lao Tzu. The text moves through paradox, simplicity, restraint, softness, power, silence, and the strange intelligence of yielding. Again and again, it questions the assumption that force, certainty, and control are the highest forms of wisdom.

This is not a book of rigid doctrine or abstract philosophy. It reads more like a series of openings. Brief passages that continue unfolding long after they are read.

The Tao Te Ching speaks about leadership, action, knowledge, and the possibility of living in alignment rather than constant friction. It asks what happens when we stop treating life as something to conquer.

For some, the text feels spiritual. For others, psychological, political, poetic, or deeply practical. Part of its endurance comes from its refusal to stay fixed in a single interpretation.

No reading required. You do not need to have finished the book to attend. Reading a chapter, a single passage, or simply arriving with curiosity is enough.
