A General Theory of Love

In July, The Unread Book Club turns to A General Theory of Love, a work that explores love not only as an emotional experience, but as a biological and relational process.

This is not a reduction of love to science. Rather, it is an attempt to understand how our emotional lives are shaped through connection, how our nervous systems develop in relation to others, and how those early patterns continue to influence us over time.

The book challenges the idea that we are fully self-contained in our emotional lives. Instead, it suggests that we are continuously shaped through interaction, that our internal states are influenced, regulated, and even formed in relationship with others.

For that reason, it opens a different kind of conversation. One that bridges what we feel with how we are formed, and asks what it means to take responsibility for the patterns we carry into connection.

We will pay particular attention to the idea of limbic regulation—how our emotional systems are influenced by those around us—and what that reveals about intimacy, healing, and awareness.

No reading required. You do not need to have finished the book to attend. Reading a chapter, a single passage, or simply arriving with curiosity is enough.
