Journey to the Lord of Power by Ibn Arabi

In February, The Unread Book Club turns to Journey to the Lord of Power, one of Ibn ʿArabi’s most intimate and demanding works. Part visionary narrative, part metaphysical teaching, this short text traces an inward ascent through encounters with authority, ego, surrender, and divine presence.

Written as a spiritual journey, the text resists easy interpretation. It asks for slowness, attention, and a willingness to sit with ambiguity. For that reason, it feels especially resonant this time of year. Our meeting takes place during the early days of Ramadan, a period traditionally oriented toward restraint, inwardness, and recalibration of intention.

We will put particular attention to Ibn Arabi’s teaching on the Moment (al-Waqt).

“He will say unceasingly with every breath, ‘My Lord, increase me in knowledge while the heavenly sphere turns by Your breath,’ and let him strive that his Moment be His breath. When the influence of the Moment befalls him, he will receive it. Let him beware of becoming enamored of it, but let him remember it, for it will be necessary to him if he instructs.”

No reading required. You do not need to have finished the book to attend. Reading a few chapters, a single passage, or simply arriving with curiosity is enough.
